Challenge

The busy pass road over the pass Lukmanier from the canton of Grisons to the canton of Ticino is an important north-south link that is used the whole year. In winter time the road is repeatedly buried and damaged by snow avalanches. For this reason, the canton has proposed to secure and protect the road with snow nets.

Solution

The client (road authority) decided to use the most economical and effective system, the Maccaferri snow nets. It was a great challenge to install the nets at over 2000 meters above sea level and to create anchors of up to 12 meters. As it is only possible to work in this area for a few months, the project was designed for 2 years
